What is Balanitis?
Inflammation of the head of the penis is known as balanitis. It is a rare condition. Approximately 1 or 2 males in 30 are affected. It is a condition in which there occurs reddish and orange discoloration in the affected area with yellow pinpoint swelling.
Who is Affected more with Balanitis?
Mostly, the men in which circumcision is not done get affected more but it can also occur in circumcised males. Before circumcision, the head of the penis is covered by a foreskin or prepuce. Young boys are mostly affected
What are the Causes of Balanitis?
- Infections: Bacterial or yeast infection that affects the skin can be one of the major cause of this problem.
- Sexually transmitted diseases like herpes, gonorrhea, syphilis or trichomonas also cause balanitis.
- Use of irritants like soaps, spermicidal jelly or any detergents.
- Psoriasis
- Skin cancer
- Improper hygiene cause skin irritation. Improper or too forceful cleaning cause this problem.
- Injury of penis tip which causes swelling and inflammation.
- Some painkillers, laxatives, antibiotics or sleeping pills cause side effects and arise this problem.
- Arthritis

- White, sticky discharge.
- Itching and pain in genital areas
- Foreskin become tight
- Pain in the foreskin of the penis
- Due to swelling, the pressure is felt on urethra which causes painful urination.
- The shaft or head of the penis becomes inflamed and red.
- A burning sensation is felt
- Bad smell from that area if not cleaned properly.

- Maintain hygiene and keep the penis clean
- Avoid strong or harsh soaps which cause irritation of the skin
- Avoid perfumes, deodorant, and chemicals on the penis
- Dry the penile area after wash or shower.
- Use condoms to avoid STI, e. sexually transmitted infections.
- Use latex-free condoms if one is allergic
- Fix the foreskin properly after proper cleaning.
