Introduction to Cutaneous Mucinosis

A cutaneous mucosa is a group of heterogeneous skin diseases caused by the aggregation of mucin (glycosaminoglycan) in the skin. Mucin is a protein generated by mast cells and fibroblasts that is a part of cutaneous connective tissue. The diseases included in this group of skin diseases are cutaneous myxoid cyst, lipoid proteinosis, myxedema, lichen myxedematosus, etc. This condition may occur in various forms. Cutaneous mucosa commonly occurs in adults and rarely affects children.
