DISH disease is a disorder of the skeletal system that starts with mineral salt deposition around various joints of the body. The affected bones also grow out of shape and size and this growth is seen as malignant. Causes and Risk factors

The exact cause of DISH is not known. However, it begins with the deposition of calcium salts in the tendons and the ligaments that occur simultaneously with abnormal hardening and over -growth of a bone.

  • People are more likely to get DISH as they age.
  • People with metabolic diseases such as diabetes and thyroid malfunction are more likely to get DISH.
  • Men are more likely than women to get DISH.
  • People who have been on certain medications such as retinoids are more likely to get DISH.

Diagnosis and Complications

The physical examination of the painful joints is done first of all. Scanning and imaging procedures such as x-rays, CT and MRI scans can be carried out. If left undiagnosed or untreated, DISH can cause the flowing complications

  • The affected joints can be completely immovable.
  • The person may lose coordination if the spine is affected.
  • Fracture and brittle bones can occur.
  • Lack of coordination in the limbs.
