Psoriasis Management in Ayurveda – Herbs, Diet & Lifestyle Tips

Abstract

In today’s era, various skin disorders are continuously affecting the quality of human life. The skin, being the largest organ of the body, serves as a protective barrier against environmental and infectious agents and plays an essential role in overall health. Psoriasis is one of the most common chronic inflammatory skin disorders and is considered autoimmune in nature. It is characterized by the rapid turnover of skin cells, resulting in the formation of thick, scaly plaques on the skin. Although not contagious, psoriasis can significantly affect an individual’s physical, emotional, and social well-being. This article discusses psoriasis, its causes, symptoms, diagnosis, and its management from an Ayurvedic perspective.

Introduction

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder that is generally non-contagious in nature. It is characterized by recurrent, well-defined red patches covered with silvery-white scales, commonly affecting the scalp, elbows, knees, lower back, ears, and genital region. The disease typically follows a relapsing and remitting course, with periods of flare-ups followed by partial or complete remission. The exact cause of psoriasis is not fully understood; however, it is believed to result from a combination of genetic predisposition and immune system dysfunction. In psoriasis, immune-mediated inflammation accelerates the growth cycle of skin cells. Normally, skin cells mature and shed within approximately 28–30 days, but in psoriasis this process may occur within 3–5 days. As a result, immature skin cells accumulate on the skin surface, leading to the formation of thick, scaly plaques. Psoriasis often runs in families, indicating a strong genetic component. Various environmental and lifestyle factors can trigger or worsen the condition in susceptible individuals.

Diagnosis of Psoriasis

Psoriasis is primarily diagnosed through clinical examination and medical history. The following methods may be used:

  1. Detailed history of symptoms and family history
  2. Physical examination of the skin, scalp, and nails
  3. Dermoscopic examination when required
  4. Skin biopsy in atypical cases to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other skin disorders
  5. Evaluation for joint involvement if psoriatic arthritis is suspected
  6. Laboratory investigations may be advised to exclude associated conditions or differential diagnoses

Ayurvedic Overview of Psoriasis

  • In Ayurveda, psoriasis is commonly correlated with Eka Kushtha and Kitibha Kushtha, which are classified under Kshudra Kushtha. Kushtha is considered a Tridoshaja disorder with predominant involvement of Vata and Kapha Dosha, along with vitiation of Tvak (skin), Rakta (blood), Mamsa (muscle tissue), and Lasika (lymphatic fluid).
  • According to Ayurvedic texts, seven factors play an important role in the pathogenesis of Kushtha: Vata, Pitta, Kapha, Tvak, Rakta, Mamsa, and Ambu (Lasika). Therefore, factors that vitiate these Doshas and Dushyas contribute to the development of Kushtha.

Nidana (Etiological Factors) According to Ayurveda

The causative factors of Kushtha are broadly classified into Aharaja Nidana (dietary factors) and Viharaja Nidana (lifestyle and behavioral factors):

Aharaja Nidana (Dietary Factors)

  1. Ati Sevana / Atyashana – excessive intake of food.
  2. Adhyashana – eating before the previous meal is digested.
  3. Ajirnashana – consuming food during indigestion.
  4. Vishamashana – irregular eating habits.
  5. Viruddha Ahara – consumption of incompatible food combinations.
  6. Excessive intake of heavy, oily, sour, fermented, and unsuitable foods.

Viharaja Nidana (Lifestyle Factors)

  1. Kayika (Physical Factors): Excessive physical exertion, overexposure to heat, and suppression of natural urges.
  2. Vachika (Verbal Factors): Improper speech and behavioral misconduct.
  3. Manasika (Psychological Factors): Stress, anxiety, grief, fear, anger, and other negative emotional states.

Samprapti (Pathogenesis)

  • Nidana Sevana (exposure to causative factors)
  • Tridosha Prakopa (aggravation of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha Doshas)
  • Vitiation of Tvak (Skin), Rakta (Blood Tissue), Mamsa (Muscle Tissue), and Lasika (Lymph tissue)
  • Shaithilya (weakening) of the affected Dhatus
  • Accumulation and localization of vitiated Doshas in susceptible tissues
  • Dosha-Dushya Sammurchhana (interaction between Doshas and tissues)

Manifestation of Kushtha (Psoriasis-like skin disorder)

Thus, according to Ayurveda, psoriasis develops due to the combined vitiation of Doshas and Dushyas, resulting in chronic inflammatory skin lesions characterized by scaling, dryness, discoloration, and recurrent flare-ups.

Symptoms of Psoriasis according to Ayurveda

  1. Eka Kushtha: Well-defined red, inflamed patches or plaques covered with dry, silvery-white scales resembling fish scales.
  2. Kitibha Kushtha: Thick, rough, dry, and grayish-black plaques with marked scaling. In severe cases, the lesions may enlarge and merge, covering extensive areas of the body.

Treatment Approach for Psoriasis as per Ayurveda

  1. Shodhana Chikitsa: In Bahu Dosha Avastha, Shodhana Chikitsa is advised according to the patient’s Prakriti and the Doshas involved. Various Panchakarma procedures are employed to eliminate the vitiated Doshas from the body. The treatment generally begins with Vamana and Virechana, followed by Basti. In selected cases, Raktamokshana may also be performed under the supervision of an Ayurvedic physician.
  2. Shamana Chikitsa: As psoriasis is associated with the vitiation of Rakta Dhatu (Blood Tissue), herbs that support healthy blood and help maintain immune balance are commonly used. Herbs such as Triphala (Terminalia chebula, Terminalia bellirica, and Emblica officinalis), Vacha (Acorus calamus), Neem (Azadirachta indica), Manjishtha (Rubia cordifolia), and Kutki (Picrorhiza kurroa) are traditionally used to support Rakta Dhatu (Blood Tissue), while Giloy (Tinospora cordifolia), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), and Daruharidra (Berberis aristata) are valued for their immunomodulatory properties. For external application, Jatyadi Taila may be applied to support skin healing, while Shatadhauta Ghrita may help soothe dryness, irritation, and burning sensations.

Prevention

  1. Avoid Aharaja and Viharaja Nidana (dietary and lifestyle causative factors).
  2. Avoid smoking, tobacco use, and excessive alcohol consumption.
  3. Follow a healthy diet and lifestyle to maintain Dosha balance.
  4. Undergo Shodhana Chikitsa periodically under the guidance of an Ayurvedic physician, if required.
