Abstract

Myositis simply means inflammation in muscles. It shows many symptoms on the skin such as rashes, inflammation, and red patches etc. It also causes muscle weakness. According to ayurveda myositis is caused by an imbalance of the three doshas that are Vata, pita and Kapha. In this article we will discuss the ayurvedic aspect and remedies to manage myositis.

Introduction

Myositis is the term used for muscle inflammation. It is mainly caused by infection, injury, chronic diseases and autoimmune disorder. It can affect people of any age, including children. In this disease shoulder, hips and thighs are affected. Along these parts skin,  lungs or heart are also affected. There are five types of myositis: dermatomyositis, inclusion body myositis, juvenile myositis, polymyositis, and toxic myositis. The two most common types are polymyositis and dermatomyositis. In polymyositis many muscles are affected by inflammation. In this only muscles are affected, other parts are not affected by this type of myositis. In dermatomyositis there is inflammation in muscles but skin is also affected in this type of myositis. Polymyositis and dermatomyositis affects women about 2-3 times more than men. Both are autoimmune conditions.

Types of Myositis

1. Dermatomyositis

In this mainly skin is affected and can be diagnosed easily because purple red rashes appear on the skin. Rashes mainly appear on the chest, knees and toes.

2. Inclusion body Myositis

This condition mainly occurs over the age of 50. And mainly men are affected by this type of myositis. Muscle weakness mainly occurs in smaller muscles and asymmetrical.

3. Juvenile Myositis

This condition mainly occurs under the age of 18. In this, girls are more affected than boys. It shows various symptoms such as stomach ache, fatigue and irritability etc.

4. Polymyositis

In this myositis muscle weakness occurs firstly in the trunk then spreads. In this patient suffering from other autoimmune diseases.

5. Toxic Myositis

The medicines(statins) which lower cholesterol mainly cause this disease. Other medicines can also cause this type of myositis but it is very rare.

Causes

It is an autoimmune disorder but injury, medicines and infection can also lead to myositis.

  • Injury- due to hard exercise mild form of myositis can occur
  • Medicines- different types of medicines can cause myositis. The most common drug that can cause myositis is statins which is responsible for lower the high cholesterol
  • Infection – most common cause is viral infection such as common cold
  • Autoimmune- In this immune system attacks our muscles. The three main types of autoimmune myositis are dermatomyositis, polymyositis and inclusion body myositis.
