Cocoon syndrome is an acquired condition, caused by an inflammatory process. It is a very rare condition which refers to total or partial encapsulation of small bowel by fibrous collagenous membrane with local inflammatory infiltrate leading to acute or chronic bowel obstruction. This is called cocoon syndrome because there is the presence of the abnormal membrane that contains some part or whole small intestine. This syndrome is also called Sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis, and also characterized by fibrous- collagenous membrane which mainly involves abdominal viscera and also is the very rare cause of intestinal obstruction. As compared to Ayurveda, this disease is mainly compared to Vata- Vyadhi, In this Vata Dosha is mainly aggravated. There are different types of remedies that can be given in case of abdominal cocoon syndrome which are; Triphala capsule, Panchshar churan, syrup Digestoplan, Mahashankh vati etc. Now we are going to discuss the disease in detail.
Abdominal cocoon syndrome or ( idiopathic encapsulating peritonitis) is a relatively is very rare cause of intestinal obstruction, and mainly described in young girls, and firstly described in 1978. In this disease thick fibrotic peritoneum encasing the small bowel partially or completely is the pathognomonic feature and the correct diagnosis is not made preoperatively. Abdominal cocoon syndrome is also known as sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis and also is the uncommon cause of the intestinal obstruction. The cocoon syndrome is firstly described in 1907 by the term named as (Peritonitis Chronica fibrosa incapsulata) and in 1978, it was termed as (Abdominal cocoon syndrome). It also is a result of a chronic intra-Abdominal fibro-inflammatory process, results in formation of fibrous tissue sheets that cover, fix and ultimately constrict the gut compromising its motility and leads to marbled thickened, leathery fibrous- connective tissue which is a sheath- like structure that involves the small intestine in the form of cocoon.

Symptoms occurs in Cocoon Syndrome are
- There is presence of recurrent acute or chronic small bowel obstruction.
- Also presence of kinking and compression of intestine in construction cocoons.
- Inflammation occurs because of that sharp pain in the stomach.
X-Ray – Simply, plain X- ray is used in cocoon syndrome as a daily routine.
USG – Before surgery, ultrasonography is performed before surgery.
CT- Scan – CT- scan is performed, to the patients who are with or without the partial intestinal obstruction.
In Ayurveda, the Cocoon syndrome is basically related to the Vata-Vyadhi. In which Vata dosha is mainly aggravated. Due to an increase in Vata Dosha inflammation occurs.
