Commonly occurring as an aftermath of a ball striking an extended fingertip forcefully flexing the DIP joint simultaneously the extensor muscles actively contracting, resulting in an overlayed stretching of the latter over the former, this is presented as swan neck deformity. This is most common in baseball players, basket players, cricketers, in fact a sport that involves throwing a ball and catching it!
It is further classified into 4 types
Type 1 – Blunt trauma with loss of tendon continuity may accompanied by a small avulsion fracture.
Type 2 – Laceration at the DIP joint with loss of tendon continuity.
Type 3 – Deep abrasion with loss of skin and subcutaneous cover.
Type 4 – Mallet fracture- the fracture is considered significant if it is greater than one third of the joint involved, and a surgery may be required.
Symptoms Of Mallet Finger
The finger may feel painful post injury and will cause drooping of it. Inability to straighten the finger, swelling, redness, tenderness bruising in the fingertip observed, sinking of the fingertip etc. Mallet finger if left untreated may lead to complications such as Chronic mallet finger deformity ,An extensor lag, non union of the fingers and swan neck deformities due to the attenuation of the volar plate and transverse retinacular at PIO etc.
