Tonsils Treatment Through Ayurveda – Natural & Effective Remedies
Abstract
Tonsils are nested quietly at the gateway of the throat, and are an important structure that act as the first line of defence in the immune system. It helps protect the body by filtering germs and pathogens that enter the body through the mouth and nose. Sometimes, the tonsils themselves become inflamed, burdened by the very pathogens they strive to keep at bay. This condition is known as tonsillitis and causes discomfort and other associated symptoms. In this text, we shall be discussing the condition of tonsillitis in detail and also its management in the modern medicinal system as well as the Indian traditional medicinal system of Ayurveda. Let’s dig into the details !!
Introduction
Tonsils are two oval-shaped lymphoid tissues situated in between the faucial pillars. These tissues form part of the body’s immune system and help trap pathogens and are therefore prone to frequent attacks of infections. When infected, they swell and become painful, leading to a condition called tonsillitis. It is commonly seen in children but can affect individuals of all ages. This inflammation can cause symptoms such as sore throat, difficulty swallowing, fever, and swollen lymph nodes. They contain immune cells that help produce antibodies to fight off infections. Although their activity decreases with age, tonsils remain a functional part of the immune system in many individuals.
1. Acute Tonsillitis
It is mainly a disease of childhood but also frequently seen in adults. It may be caused usually as a primary infection of the tonsils itself but may also occur as a result of infection of the upper respiratory tract usually following microbial infections. Common causative bacteria include Staphylococcus, hemolytic streptococcus, Pneumococcus, Haemophilus influenzae. Improper oral and dental hygiene and poor nourishment are the predisposing factors for the occurrence of tonsillitis. When tonsils are inflamed as a result of generalised infection of oropharyngeal mucosa, it is known as catarrhal tonsillitis. When the inflammatory exudate collects in the tonsillar crypts, gives looks of multiple white spots on the inflamed tonsillar surface, and presents follicular tonsillitis. When these crypts coalesce to form a membrane over the surface of tonsil, it gives a clinical picture of membranous tonsillitis. When the whole tonsil is uniformly congested and swollen, it is termed as parenchymatous tonsillitis.
2. Chronic Tonsillitis
Chronic inflammatory changes in the tonsil are usually the result of recurrent acute infections treated inadequately. Recurrent infections lead to development of minute abscesses within the lymphoid follicles. These become walled off by fibrous tissue and surrounded by inflammatory cells. The commonest and the most important cause of recurrent infection of tonsils in a persistent or recurrent infection of nose and paranasal sinuses. This leads to postnasal discharge which then infects the tonsils as well.

Ayurvedic Aspect and Management
In Ashtang Ayurveda, there is a different branch named Shalakya Tantra that deals with the disorders of the Eyes, Ear, Nose and Throat. There are a number of health conditions that are mentioned according to the parts of the branch. Acharya Sushruta has mentioned Tundikeri, which is closely related to Tonsillitis, in the disorders of the palate. However, Acharya Vagbhata has counted it in throat disorders.
A thick swelling resembling the fruit of the tundikeri plant in shape and appearing about the root of the palate attended with a burning piercing or pricking pain and suppuration is termed as Tundikeri.
A swelling in the throat located at the meeting place of the lower jaw, resembling the fruit of a karpasa, slimy, with mild pain and hard to touch, this is known as Tundikerika.
There is involvement of kapha and blood. When they’re vitiated they cause inflammation of the tonsils.
As per Ashtanga Hridyam, Tundikeri that has occurred from pitta (blood) need be let out, site rubbed with paste of ksaudra (honey), sita (sugar), priyangu, patanga and rodhra, gargling to be done with decoction of the said drugs, decoction (kadha) of draksha and parushaka is suitable. Tundikerika, kapha born, needs to be applied with the paste of katuka and agardhuma. Oil prepared with sveta (girikarnika), fruits (seeds) of apamarga, danti, saindhava and jantughna to be used for nasya (nasal medication) and held in the mouth for sometime.

Conclusion
Tonsillitis is a common yet treatable condition. Early identification and appropriate care are key to preventing complications. While viral forms often resolve on their own, bacterial tonsillitis requires medical intervention. With good hygiene practices and awareness, the risk of recurrent infections can be significantly reduced. We have discussed both the views and the management. In the modern medicinal system the condition is managed by harsh antibiotics and the microbes are now getting resistance to a number of antibiotics and there is no end to it. Whereas, ayurvedic medicines focus on building strong immunity so that the virus, bacterias can do no harm to humans. Hence, it is better to choose a safe alternative. And Planet Ayurveda’s above mentioned medicinal blends are perfect for the management of Tonsillitis.
