Esophageal Motility Disorder

INTRODUCTION TO ESOPHAGEAL MOTILITY DISORDER

Esophageal motility disorders are usually characterized by dysphagia and chest pain. The main function of the esophagus is to deliver the food to the stomach from the mouth, where the digestion of food takes place. This transportation of the food requires an efficient synergistic esophageal motility pattern which propels the foods forward from above part to the lower and passes it to the stomach, clearing bile reflux and acid from below. Any disruption in this muscular integrated motion causes hindrance in the delivery of the food and fluid. This results in certain signs and symptoms along with chest pain and dysphagia. Esophageal motility disorders can be divided into primary or secondary EMD and differentiated depending upon specific abnormal manometric patterns.

AYURVEDIC ASPECT OF ESOPHAGEAL MOTILITY DISORDER

As per Ayurveda, the balance of tridosha, i.e. Vata, Pitta and Kapha dosha are necessary to maintain health and any deviation in their balance leads to health ailments. In EMD predominantly the Vata dosha is vitiated which causes loss of motility in muscles of the esophagus.
