Esophageal motility disorder or EMD is termed for any condition causing problem in swallowing, spasmodic pain in chest after having any allergic food or regurgitation of food. EMD’s characteristic symptom is dysphagia, i.e. difficulty in swallowing. In EMD the muscles of the esophagus do not contract resulting in improper delivery of liquid and food in the stomach. In fact EMD is an umbrella term for different disorders which causes swallowing difficult like dysphagia, achalasia, nutcracker esophagus, diffuse esophageal spasm spasm, and hypertensive lower esophageal sphincter and there are also certain secondary esophageal motility disorders are GERD, mellitus, scleroderma and diabetes. In this write up you can get all the details about EMD and its Ayurvedic management.
INTRODUCTION TO ESOPHAGEAL MOTILITY DISORDER
Esophageal motility disorders are usually characterized by dysphagia and chest pain. The main function of the esophagus is to deliver the food to the stomach from the mouth, where the digestion of food takes place. This transportation of the food requires an efficient synergistic esophageal motility pattern which propels the foods forward from above part to the lower and passes it to the stomach, clearing bile reflux and acid from below. Any disruption in this muscular integrated motion causes hindrance in the delivery of the food and fluid. This results in certain signs and symptoms along with chest pain and dysphagia. Esophageal motility disorders can be divided into primary or secondary EMD and differentiated depending upon specific abnormal manometric patterns.
AYURVEDIC ASPECT OF ESOPHAGEAL MOTILITY DISORDER
As per Ayurveda, the balance of tridosha, i.e. Vata, Pitta and Kapha dosha are necessary to maintain health and any deviation in their balance leads to health ailments. In EMD predominantly the Vata dosha is vitiated which causes loss of motility in muscles of the esophagus.
CAUSES OF ESOPHAGEAL MOTILITY DISORDERS
As there are different types of EMD hence the causes can also be different like:
- Neurological disorder
- Weak muscles of esophagus
- Esophageal spasms
- Neuromuscular disorder

DIAGNOSIS OF ESOPHAGEAL MOTILITY DISORDER
Your doctor will ask for detailed clinical history and physical examination will be done. If they suspect Esophageal motility disorder certain tests are recommended to confirm the EMD like Barium esophagography, esophageal manometry and upper endoscopy.
TREATMENT FOR ESOPHAGEAL MOTILITY DISORDER
The conventional treatment of EMD includes medications for muscle spasms, botox or botulinum toxin injection in spasm areas, Heller myotomy, i.e. esophageal sphincter muscle division in order to allow passing of food, lower esophagus balloon dilation and surgical treatment of the lower esophageal sphincter valve to decrease the muscle pressure.
