Effect of Beejpushti Ras in Oligospermia – Ayurvedic Treatment for Male Infertility

Abstract

Procreation is something that is very important for mankind to maintain its lineage on Earth. Sometimes, the very important components to produce a healthy baby get vitiated. That further leads to problems such as infertility. Infertility is a wider term used and generally used when the couple is unable to achieve pregnancy after 12 months of regular and unprotected sexual intercourse. Infertility can affect both males and females. In male infertility, there are certain causes and sperm abnormalities that lead to male infertility (usually refers to sperm abnormalities). Among these sperm-related parameters, low sperm concentration (i.e. oligospermia), poor sperm motility (i.e. asthenospermia) and abnormal sperm morphology (i.e. teratospermia) are the most important parameters. In this article, we shall be discussing one of the reasons behind male infertility, Oligospermia and how Beejpushti Ras is useful in the management of the same. Let’s get started !!

Introduction

Male fertility is largely dependent on both the quality and quantity of sperm, with sperm count being a crucial parameter in evaluating reproductive health. Oligospermia refers to a lower-than-normal concentration of sperm in the ejaculate and is a significant contributor to male infertility. With rising stress levels, poor dietary habits, exposure to toxins, and sedentary lifestyles, the prevalence of oligospermia is increasing, especially in urban populations. 90% of male infertility problems are related to sperm count. Often going undetected until fertility issues arise, oligospermia requires comprehensive evaluation and tailored treatment. Addressing the condition through traditional healing systems like Ayurveda offers promising results in restoring reproductive potential.

A brief description of the research study done on our herbal mineral preparation called Beejpushti Ras in oligospermia is presented in this article.

Beejpushti Ras

अपत्यसंतानकरः बीजदोषनिवारणः। बीजपुष्ट्यै पुरुषस्य बीजपुष्टिः रसः स्मृतः ।।

Beejpushti Rasa provides the benefits of spermatogenic drugs widely used for reproductive health. The ingredients of this kalpa include Suvarna Bhasma (gold calx), Poornachandroday Makardhwaj, Salampanja [Munjatak] (Dactylorhiza hatagirea), Gokshur (Tribulus terrestris), Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), Yashti (Glycyrrhiza glabra), Amalaki (Embelica officinalis), Atmagupta (Mucuna pruriens), Musli (Chlorophytum borivilianum) and Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera). The spermatogenic activity of Beejpusti Rasa has been documented by experimental studies of 173-estradiol-induced oligospermia in Wistar rats. After treatment with Beejpusti Rasa, the 173-estradiol-induced impaired sperm count, spermatogenesis and serum testosterone levels were reversed.

In one of recent clinical studies conducted at the prestigious National Institute of Ayurveda, Jaipur, positive results were shown after 90 days of treatment with Beejpusti Rasa in the dose of 2 tablets twice daily. This open-label, single-arm, interventional study (CTRI/2022/03/041380) involved 101 male participants with oligospermia for 90 days. There were a total of 5 visits in this study, namely Visit 1 (Day-14), Visit 2 (Day-7), Visit 3 (Day 0±3), Visit 4 (Day 45±3) and Visit 5 (Day 90±3). The main inclusion criteria for the study were male participants aged 22 to 40 years who showed a sperm count less than 15 million/ml in two semen analyses done at an interval of one week and had a history of regular sexual intercourse with a healthy spouse.

The primary objective of this study was to determine the increase in sperm count after 90 days of treatment with Beejpusti Rasa (Visit 5 vs. Visit 2). The secondary objectives of this study were to evaluate the changes in morphological characteristics of sperm (motility, natural form, live form, etc.) [Visit 5 vs. Visit 2], changes in blood male sex drive levels [Visit 5 vs. Visit 2] and changes in subjective behaviour-related behaviours based on questionnaires (Visit 3 to Visit 5). The secondary objective was to evaluate hematological and biochemical safety by means of complete blood count (CBC), liver function tests (LFT) and renal function tests (RFT) at Visit 2 and Visit 5.

After 90 days of treatment with Beejpusti Rasa, a significant increase was observed in sperm concentration (p < 0.001), i.e., the median sperm count increased from 10 million sperms/ml on visit 2 to 17 million sperms/ml on visit 5. A significant increase was also observed in sperm motility (p < 0.001), i.e., the median sperm motility increased from 50% on visit 2 to 65% on visit 5.

Blood male hormone levels showed significant improvement (p<0.001) after 90 days of treatment with Beejpusti Rasa as compared to visit 3. Subjective behavior-related functions also showed significant improvement (p<0.001) on visit 5 as compared to visit 3. CBC, LFT and RFT did not show significant negative changes on visit 5 as compared to visit 2. In short, Beejpushti Ras can be used as an effective and safe Ayurvedic medicine for increasing sperm count and sperm motility in male infertility.

Conclusion

As we discussed in the study, Beejpushti Rasa stands as a promising Ayurvedic formulation for the management of oligospermia offering a blend of time-tested spermatogenic herbs and herbo-mineral ingredients. Enriched with a number of minerals and herbs this formulation supports the revival of natural spermatogenesis and hormonal equilibrium. Its multifaceted action nourishes the Shukra Dhatu (reproductive tissue), enhances seminal fluid quality, and improves male reproductive potential in a holistic, balanced manner.

The observed increase in sperm concentration, motility and hormonal parameters after regular administration reflects its capability to target the root causes of sperm deficiency without compromising systemic health. Additionally, the improvement in subjective well-being and behavioral parameters highlights its Rasayana effect—rejuvenating both body and mind. The absence of adverse changes in CBC, LFT, and RFT further confirms the safety profile of this formulation even after prolonged use. Thus, Beejpushti Rasa offers an effective, well-tolerated, and natural therapeutic option in male infertility, especially in cases of oligospermia. Rooted in classical wisdom and validated by contemporary evaluations, it exemplifies how Ayurvedic medicine can provide real solutions in reproductive health without the burden of side effects often seen with synthetic alternatives.
