Abstract

The liver is considered one of the most important fundamental organs, which plays an important role in the metabolism process, detoxification of the body, and also helps in the digestion of fat through the secretion of bile. Liver function also helps in the regulation of blood sugar levels and stores essential vitamins and minerals, which are needed by our body. As per today’s era, people are not taking proper food and are not following healthy lifestyle habits. Due to their sedentary lifestyle habits, there is a prevalence of many disorders which are related to the liver, which are Cirrhosis of the liver, Hepatitis, Fatty liver diseases, and liver carcinoma. Sometimes the symptoms of the following diseases remain unnoticeable in the early stages, but as the conditions worsen, the symptoms may often appear. To cope with all these issues, it is important to maintain healthy lifestyle habits, proper dietary habits, and one can go for health checkups at a particular time interval so that all these problems can be prevented and the overall health of the liver remains good.

Introduction

The liver is considered the largest internal organ of the body, which is located in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen. The liver is responsible for the essential body functions. The liver helps in maintaining the levels of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates, and also maintains the blood sugar level of the body. It helps in the neutralization and elimination of waste products from the blood. The liver is responsible for the production of bile, which is a key factor for the absorption and digestion of fat and fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E, vitamin K, and vitamin B12. It helps in the synthesis of plasma proteins, that is, albumin and clotting factors, which are important for coagulation and circulation of blood.  In the liver fat fat-soluble vitamins are stored, and minerals such as iron and copper are used by the body whenever the body needs these minerals.

As per ayurvedic texts, the liver is correlated with the Yakrit. Yakrit (Liver) is a vital organ of the raktvaha srotas (channels for the circulation and formation of blood). It is the main site for the utpatti of rakt dhatu (formation of blood). Mainly, pitta dosha is present in the liver, especially ranjak pitt, which is mainly responsible for imparting red colour to the blood and is situated in the liver and spleen. The liver is also responsible for maintaining the equilibrium of agni (digestive and metabolic fire). When there is aggravation of pitta dosha, it is combined with rakt dhatu (Blood tissues), and then rakt Dhatu also gets vitiated, which results in various conditions such as inflammation, discoloration, and disturbed levels of enzymes that are present in the liver.  Further, if it is not treated, then it can lead to permanent damage to the liver. Ayurveda mainly focuses on eliminating the cause of this occurrence, ama (toxins), herbs that are responsible for boosting agni (digestive fire), and herbs used for maintaining the balance of pitta dosha and for nourishment and enhancement of the blood tissues.

When there is a disturbance in the functions of the liver, the body’s balance is disturbed, which results in disturbance of the body’s balance, sluggish metabolism, improper digestion, hormonal imbalance, and weakened immunity.

So it is important to maintain liver health. According to Ayurveda, the liver is considered the main site of pitta dosha, so if there is a disturbance in the balance of pitta dosha, then it can lead to ama (Toxins) accumulation, which further leads to various health concerns.  So early diagnosis and preventive measures are important to cure any disease. A balanced diet, a healthy lifestyle, and herbal medications are important to strengthen the liver in a natural way.
