Paronychia Treatment in Ayurveda

Abstract

Paronychia is an infection of the nails that make the nails red, painful, and inflamed. This is a normal condition that has no fatal rates but is found in more than one million people per year. The condition usually resolves in a few weeks but still, we need to know the causes and measures to prevent this infectious disease. In this article, we will discuss all these measures along with the herbal treatment helpful in treating this infectious condition.

Paronychia

Introduction

Paronychia is an infection of tissue folds around the fingernails or toenails. But most commonly it is found in fingernails. The bacteria enter the broken skin near the nail area and irritate.

There are two types of Paronychia

  1. Acute Paronychia- appears suddenly after exposure to infections
  2. Chronic Paronychia- after six weeks of the acute infection, if the disease is not responding to the treatment, the infection spreads to nearby cuticles and areas.

To avoid the spread of infection you should keep the area clean and take proper treatment in the very acute stage only. Paronychia once treated can reoccur due to negligence. Untreated Paronychia cases could spread the infection more to the nail’s surface and cause the full detachment of nails from the nail bed.

Ayurvedic Aspect

In Ayurveda Paronychia is correlated with “Kunakha”. Here nakha means nail and ‘ku’ means infected/ abnormal/ diseased nail. The causes of kunakha mentioned in Ayurveda could be described as Unhygienic practices. It is a tridoshaj disorder that involves Pitta dosha dominance.

Pitta pacifying treatment along with shodhan is indicated in such conditions as standard treatment options along with many herbal medicines and remedies. The complete treatment is described later in the article so read the article carefully without skipping to know more.
