Introduction

Liver is an important organ of the body. Liver performs a number of functions including metabolism of carbohydrates, protein and lipid. Other functions include detoxification of blood and formation and storage of minerals and vitamins. Faulty dietary habits result in fat deposition in the liver. This causes hepatocytes malfunctioning. With time, if a person does not take healthy measures, the condition aggravates and the first manifestation of diseased liver is fatty liver disease. If no care is provided to the problem, the condition worsens and takes a formidable turn which is generally pronounced as cirrhosis of the liver. Ayurvedic view and management

Liver and intestines are considered to be the abode of pitta dosha. Due to various reasons including dietary habits of consuming food with salt, spices, sour and hot potency for a longer period and prolonged alcohol consumption, fish intake and improper and not wholesome mixing of food of different properties leads to pitta dosha aggravation resulting in malfunctioning of the liver. This results in malnutrition as this causes hindrance in dhatu poshan which results in lower secretion of digestive juices and enzymes and leads to compromised state of liver. The usual first symptom seen in patients is pallor or the paleness of the skin that is caused by  lower haemoglobin. Pallor is not only seen in the liver condition but can be seen in other diseases (for example – bleeding disorders).  Now if the person does not stop consuming causative factors, the condition turns into jaundice, the aggravated pitta takes place in the skin and the eyes and stool turns grey. If not paid attention at this stage, the condition leads to kumbh kamla that can be correlated with liver cirrhosis. In this condition, the digestive fire diminishes and skin turns dry, the fluid starts to accumulate in the body, pain in the joint and colour of urine and stool turns dark. Other than these there could be vertigo and loss of strength and enthusiasm seen in hepatic encephalopathy. The ayurvedic detoxification management includes oleation therapy, purgation therapy (pitta pacifying) and enema with medicated liquid. The suppressing management includes usage of medicines such as navayas loha, vidangadi loha, ichhabhedi ras, punarnava mandoor, arogyavardhini vati, panchanan vati, triphala powder, draksharishta, lohasava, panchatikta ghrita, danti ghrita, dadim ghrita and various other medicines and single herbal formulations.
