Ayurvedic Secrets for Fatty Liver – Best Ways to Prevent & Manage Naturally

Fatty liver disease is a major health concern. Fatty liver is a common problem amongst children as well as adults. Fatty liver disease is a common hepatic disorder that is characterized by the abnormal accumulation of fat within liver cells. Fatty liver accounts for 5-10 percent extra weight of the liver. It is closely associated with obesity, diabetes, sedentary lifestyle, excessive alcohol intake, and metabolic disorders. Diagnosis involves liver function test, ultrasound, and sometimes a biopsy can be done to determine the extent of liver damage. In Ayurveda, fatty liver condition can be correlated with Yakrit Roga(liver diseases), which involves vitiation of Kapha and Pitta dosha(functional energy principle) along with Medo Dhatu dushti (imbalance of the fat tissues). If fatty liver is left untreated, it may further progress to fibrosis, cirrhosis, and sometimes even hepatocellular carcinoma. Early diagnosis, dietary regulation, lifestyle modification, and herbal formulations play an important role in the prevention and management of fatty liver. This article mainly focuses on causes, symptoms, diagnosis and ayurvedic review of fatty liver disease and herbal remedies, and also the ayurvedic treatment for this disease.

Introduction

The liver is one of the most important vital and largest internal organs of the human body, which helps in metabolism and the production of essential enzymes and hormones in our body. It plays a vital role in digestion by processing nutrients from food, storing energy for later use, and detoxifying harmful substances such as poisons, alcohol, and drugs to keep the body healthy. Fatty liver is a condition that develops when there is an excessive accumulation of fat in the liver cells. Generally, it is normal for the liver to contain some fat, but if the fat accumulation is more than 10 percent of the liver’s weight, then it is suggestive of fatty liver. This excess fat accumulation may lead to inflammation of the liver.

Ayurvedic Overview of Fatty Liver

According to Ayurvedic terminology, fatty liver can be correlated with medoroga(metabolic disorder due to the accumulation of excess fat) and yakritvriddhi (liver enlargement). Fatty liver is a condition that can be due to the imbalance of doshas (functional energy principle) that are involved, such as kapha and pitta, and agnimandya(weak digestion). Ayurveda focuses on treating the root cause of diseases through balancing the doshas(functional energy principle), strengthening the agni (digestive fire), and removing the infiltrated ama (toxins). According to Ayurveda, the Yakrit(Liver) is considered to be the primary organ for the formation of the rakt dhatu(channels which are related to the formation and carrying of blood).

So we need to balance pitta dosha by flushing out ama(toxins) from the body. Detoxification and metabolism are the main functions of the liver. In Ayurveda, there are many medications that have been used to treat this disease and assist the liver in performing its function properly. Many Panchkarma procedures, which will help in improving the functioning of the liver, Vaman (Therapeutic enema), Virechana (Purgation therapy), Basti (Therapeutic enema) are used.  Sometimes, for the best results, Virechana (Purgation therapy) is recommended because it helps in the elimination of pitta dosha. Yakrit vikara (liver disease) is due to an imbalance of pitta, so virechana is given to the patient. Lifestyle and diet changes are important, which focus on avoiding the foods that increase kapha doshas and increasing the diet that helps in reducing kapha doshas.

Nidan(CAUSES)

  • Viruddha Aahara (junk food)
  • Atisnigdha Bhojan (oily foods)
  • Atimatra Bhojan (Overeating)
  • Disturbed Agni (digestive fire)
  • Blocked Srotas (body channels)
  • Avyayama (Lack of physical activity)

Puravroop(Prodormal Symptoms)

  • Agnimandya (digestive fire problem)
  • Aruchi (loss of appetite)
  • Gauravta (heaviness in the body)
  • Aalasya (lethargy)
  • Udarshool (pain in abdomen)
  • Hrillas (nausea)

Roop(Symptoms)

  • Daurbalya (Lethargy)
  • Sthaulya(obesity)
  • Aadhmana (Abdominal distention)
  • Atisara (diarrhoea)
  • Ajirna (Indigestion)
  • Amlapitta (Hyperacidity)
  • Kamala (Jaundice)

Samprapti (Pathogenesis)

Excessive consumption of oily and sweet sugary foods causes vitiation of the pitta and kapha doshas, due to which there is a dosha imbalance, which causes weakening of the digestive fire, leading to the formation of ama (toxins). Due to abnormality of kapha and agni, there is an accumulation of meda dhatu (fat tissues)over the yakrit (liver). Accumulated meda dhatu(fat) and ama(toxins) cause strotoavrodh (blockage of body channels), which further progresses to the diseases.
