Metastatic Crohn’s disease can occur in any location in the body, causing widespread symptoms that may not be limited to the gastrointestinal tract. The latest and most frequent is bone disease. The most distinguishing feature of metastatic crohn’s disease may include the presence of granulomas which may be cutaneous and non-caseating in nature. These are non contiguous with the gastrointestinal tract. The causes of metastatic crohn’s disease will be described as follows.
Metastatic Crohn’s disease is thought to be caused by extraintestinal spread of Crohn’s fistulas, as well as by the development of circulating cells and antibody-producing cells within the body. More recently, it has been recognized that tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL) are also produced, and that TILs may play a role in the initiation of the disease. Metastatic Crohn’s disease tends to affect both men and women equally. The average age at diagnosis in most of the caes is 70 years, however, the most common age observed at onset is 60 years. This will lead to the presentation of a variety of symptoms described as follows.
The clinical presentation of the condition of Metastatic Crohn’s disease can be different from patient to patient. The most common presentation is chronic disease of the skin (particularly the hands and feet), followed by the gastrointestinal tract (often presenting as abdominal pain). In the ayurvedic aspect, we can correlate the condition of metastatic crohn’s disease with the vitiation of the pitta dosha which further vitiates the other dosha and different components of the body. This will result in various difficulties such as weakness, weight loss, burning sensation, etc. The bhrajaka pitta is believed to be residing in the skin and the skin manifestations of this disease can be a vitiation of the bhrajaka.
