Joints are the part of skeletal system, which connects two bones which helps in movement of bones. Joints consists of following parts- Cartilage, Synovial membrane and fluid, Ligaments, Tendons, Meniscus and Bursas. Different types of joints are-

  1. Ball and socket joints
  2. Hinge joints
  3. Pivot joints
  4. Ellipsoidal joints

Joint Pain

Joint pain can be caused by any injury or disease in joints, which results in degradation of muscles and tissues. This problem has now become a common problem among people of all age groups. The reasons for joint pain can vary from person to person but the most commonly seen reasons can be obesity, poor diet or eating habits, overexertion and stress. Symptoms Of Joint Pain

Symptoms associated with joint pain may include-

  • Stiffness in joints
  • Synovial inflammation
  • Swelling and tenderness
  • Restricted range of motion
  • Redness in joints
  • Difficulty in getting up
  • Weakness in body
  • Decreasing the strength in muscles
  • Difficulty in waking up

Causes Of Joint Pain

According to Ayurvedic, there are two major types of joint problems caused either by Vata dosha or ama. The joint pain occurs when ama, which is a sticky, toxic waste product gets accumulated in the weaker parts of the body. It causes swelling and pain in joints. Major causes of the joint pain are discussed as follows-

1. Vata Originated Joint Problem

Vata, which is responsible for controlling circulation and nervous system gets triggered. This in turn affects the metabolism, digestion and circulation, which results in degeneration of tissues due to lack of nourishment. This imbalance causes direct effect on Kapha which is responsible for the lubrication of the joints. This results in weakening of joints and causes pain.

2. Ama Related Joint Problem

Ama, which is the main reason for the digestive disorders, sometimes the environmental or any other external/internal factors can trigger the conversion of ama to Amavisha. This causes swelling, inflammation and pain in joints. Ama gets blends with fluids (Kapha) present in joints which forms a toxic substance called shleshma. Shleshma inhibits the motion in joints and damages the morphology of bone. This can affect any age group of people.

3. Osteoarthritis 

Mainly there are two types of arthritis which can affect any age group are osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis is most common in adults of age group 35-40. This type of arthritis can be caused due to past injury, dislocated joints, ligament injuries, poor posture and torn cartilage. Common symptoms include inflammation, bone spurs, pain, tenderness and stiffness in joints.

4. Viral or Bacterial Infections

Certain infectious diseases such as mumps, influenza and hepatitis. For instance hepatitis, liver plays an important role in production of thyroid hormones and their metabolism. This directly or indirectly affects the normal functioning of bilirubin.

5 . Lupus

It’s an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation in the whole body, which in turn affects various organs and tissues which includes heart, skin, kidneys, joints and brain. Major symptoms in lupus are fever, fatigue, rashes, joint pain and shortness of breath. Main causes of lupus are abnormal hormone level, infections, environmental factors, hereditary or by medications.

6 . Diet and Nutrition Habits

There are various food products including red meat can cause a trigger in level of uric acid, a chemical which is formed by breakdown of amino acids such as purines. Food sources like peas, dairy products, pulses and all products that have high protein content causes high level of uric acid. People with smoking habits can make this condition worse.

7 . Hereditary

This can be genetically acquired from ancestors.

8 . Other Causes

Many severe diseases like sarcoidosis, osteoporosis and fibromyalgia can cause severe joints

  1. Affected person should include calcium in their diet, including dairy products like milk, cheese, yoghurt etc. these helps in increasing bone strength and boosts up the immune system.
  2. Should consume vegetables like spinach, kale, asparagus and collard greens.
  3. Various herbs like cumin, ginger, fenugreek, turmeric and asafetida (also called hing in Hindi) should be added in daily diet to reduce the symptoms of joint pain.
  4. Berries- These are the amazing source of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, which are helpful in reducing inflammation.
  5. Walnuts have proved to be very beneficial in reducing joint pain.
  6. Fish- Fishes like salmon and tuna have omega-3 fatty acids which helps in increasing the lubrication of fluids in joints.

  8. Affected person should consume food products which have omega-3, like soybean, walnuts and flaxseed in diet.
