Abstract

Tularemia

Introduction

Tularemia is an infectious disease. It is a rare condition also known as rabbit fever. It attacks lymph nodes, vision systems, lungs and eyes. The main causative agent is bacteria called Francisella tularensis. It usually affects animals like rabbits, rodents,rats, squirrels or birds,domestic animals but may spread to humans via animal bite or direct exposure through any other way. It is a highly contagious disease but can be managed by medications. In research it is evident that this bacteria was used as a biological weapon in world war ll.

Symptoms Of Tularemia

Headache, exhaustion, fever are the basic symptoms. Specific symptoms are also there on the basis of different types of tularemia. People exposed to this problem may get sick within three to five days or max 21 days. The symptoms based on different types of tularemia are as follows-

1. Ulceroglandular

The commonest type of tularemia. Ulcer at the sight of infection. Infection is due to insect bite or animal bite. Lymph nodes get swollen and lymph glands become painful. Fever, chills are the common symptoms with headache and exhaustion. This is the most common condition in all types of tularemia.

2. Oculoglandular Tularemia

This type of tularemia affects the vision or may cause vision defects. Eye pain, eye redness, swelling in eyes, eyelid ulcer are the common symptoms of this type of ulcerative colitis. Patients usually complained of sensitivity to light.

3. Oropharyngeal Tularemia

Target parts of the body are the mouth, digestive tract and throat in this type of ulcerative colitis. Fever, throat pain, diarrhea, vomiting, inflamed tonsils, mouth ulcer, fever are the common symptoms in this type of tularemia.

4. Pneumonic Tularemia

Dry cough, difficulty breathing, chest pain, dry cough are the common symptoms of pneumonic tularemia. Symptoms can resemble pneumonia.

5. Typhoidal Tularemia

Sore throat, muscle pain, vomiting and diarrhea, enlarged liver, enlarged spleen, pneumonia are the common symptoms of typhoidal tularemia.

Causes Of Tularemia

The basic cause of tularemia is F tularensis. A well known bacteria which can live in soil, water, and dead animals for weeks. This disease may transfer via several routes. Pagets Disease

1. Insect Bites: It is a common cause of this disease. Ticks and deer flies are the common flies which spread this problem. Ulceroglandular tularemia is one type which is mostly caused by insect bites.

2. Dead animal exposure can be a major causative factor for diseases like tularemia. If a person gets exposed to or bitten by an infected animal. The causative agent i.e bacteria may enter via skin through cuts or abrasions/bite. This is a peculiar cause of ulceroglandular tularemia. The ocular type of tularemia occurs after touching or rubbing the eyes with infected hands.

3. Airborne Bacteria: In the episodes of soil gathering or activities like construction. Bacteria may be inhaled to lead to a pneumonic type of tularemia. Industry workers or people working in labs may get infected as chances of infection are higher.

4. Contaminated food or water can be the cause of spreading this problem. Eating uncooked meat of infected animals may lead to this problem. Although this way of spreading the bacteria is uncommon.

Preventive Measures

  1. Avoid contaminated food and water.
  2. Prevent domestic animals to get infected.
  3. Prevent children from washing the hand after contact with pets.
  4. Take quick medical treatment if there is an animal bite is there.
  5. Avoid eating improperly cooked meat.
  6. Maintain proper sanitation.
  7. Save yourself from animal attack.
