It is a neurological disease caused by inflammation of the brain (encephalitis) and is called SSPE. This disease can be caused by the reactivation of the measles virus or by inappropriate immunity to the measles virus. In 1933, Dawson described a condition he called “inclusion body encephalitis’ ‘, which is subacute encephalitis with loss of neuronal cells and the appearance of Cowdrey A inclusions in neurons and glial cells. Van Bogaert (1945) reported a similar disease in which white cerebral lesions showed fibrillary gliosis with distinct subacute inflammatory infiltrates, which he termed “subacute sclerosing leukoencephalitis’ ‘ described the same disease and stated that it was due to measles. In this trial, the disease was selected as subacute sclerosing panencephalitis. That’s why we’re going to take a brief look at SSPE in this article today. We will discuss causes, symptoms, pathogenesis, diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment according to the Allopathic and Ayurvedic points of view.
Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a serious, disabling, and fatal neurological disease associated with measles (rubella). This disease occurs years after measles. It is also called Dawson disease.
In most cases, measles does not cause brain damage. However, weak immunity against measles or some variants of the disease can lead to serious illness and death. This response causes inflammation in the brain that can last for years. Although SSPE is reported all over the world, it is a very rare disease in Western countries. SSPE usually occurs years after the person has had measles, even if they seem to have recovered. Men are affected more than women. This disease usually occurs in children and adolescents.
The exact pathogenesis of SSPE is unknown, but some evidence suggests that the lysis of neurons or oligodendrocytes is induced by the antibody and not by the direct effect of the virus.
There are the following symptoms related to SSPE:
- Mild cognitive impairment (e.g., memory loss)
- Some people will go blind.
- The seizure will take place.
- Behaviour changes (e.g., irritability)
- Increased body temperature
- Abnormal heart rate
- Being easily disturbed
- Mood swings
- Jerking and muscle spasms
- Abnormal blood pressure
There are the following tests that can be done to diagnose SSPE:
- EEG (Electroencephalogram)
- MRI of the brain
- CT scan
- Blood test: Serum antibody to see the history of measles infection
- Fluorescent antibody test
There is no cure for SSPE, but treatment usually aims to control symptoms. Some antibiotics and drugs that support the immune system can be used to slow the progression of the disease.
There is no fix for this. Patients with this disease die within 1-3 years after diagnosis, although some patients may survive longer with medication.
The measles vaccine is the only known vaccine for SSPE. The measles vaccine is very effective in reducing the number of children affected.
Ayurvedic Overview Of SSPE
In Ayurveda, we can relate SSPE to two main factors: one is the effect of tridosha, i.e., Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, and pranvaha srotas dushti; and the other main factor is aagantuj vyadhi because it is caused by measles. Vata dosha’s variation is caused by wasting dhatus or blocking channels. Vata, Pitta, and Kapha act in all channels of the body. Because of its subtlety, Vata itself supports both doshas, Pitta and Kapha. When it gets severe, it excites them and takes them to different places, creates different diseases due to channel blockage, dries the rasa, etc. This causes symptoms of all three doshas in the disease.

SSPE is a neurological disease that occurs in the brain. In Ayurveda, we can associate this disease with a deficiency of tridosha (Vata, Pitta and Kapha) which is another cause of aagantuj vyadhi as it is caused by measles.
