Pregnancy is something that requires normalcy in all forms. If a woman is healthy, by healthy we mean a sound state of good mental and physical fitness then she conceives easily and gives birth to a healthy child. As per ayurveda when there is a balance between kshetra (undamaged genital tract) and beej (good quality sperm and ovum) then a lady will attain healthy pregnancy. Age plays a crucial role in this, after the age of 35 years a lady faces great problems in conceiving. So let’s start discussing what are the complications associated with pregnancy after the age of 35 years.
Introduction
As we get older we are more likely to suffer from certain health conditions that can give rise to rigorous complications before and during the complete time period of pregnancy. According to Ayurveda embryo is originated by the aggregation of undamaged sperm and ovum in women having active genital tract with healthy uterus during ritukala (menstrual cycle). It grows with the utilisation of suitable nourishment and proper management during antenatal care.
Lord atreya said that embryos are produced by matrija (mother), pitrij (father), atmaj (self), satmya (suitability) and rasaj (nutrition), all these five factors play crucial roles in attaining healthy pregnancy.Ayurveda believes that the human body is composed of five mahabhutas [akash (sky), vayu (air), agni (fire), jal (water) and prithvi (mother earth)]. The Sources of these mahabhutas are said to be mother, father, rasa and atma. Atma is always associated with ‘satwa’ (heart). The normalcy of shonita (ovum) and shukra (sperms) of mother and father depends upon the use of ‘satmya’ (wholesome and suitable diet).

Fertility problems
As we all know, women are born with set numbers of eggs. Every woman releases an egg during the menstrual cycle. Menstrual cycle is started at the age of 12-14 years known as “menarche”. According to ayurveda we call it ‘rajo darshan”. After the age of 45 to 50 years there comes a phase of “menopause” (atrav nivriti) after that a lady has natural decline in reproductive hormones and has decrease in reproductive power.
