Peripheral Neuropathy Types and Treatments In Ayurveda
Abstract
Peripheral neuropathy is a typical entanglement of large numbers of the systemic amyloidosis. Albeit the reason for neuropathy isn’t properly clear, it is possibly connected with amyloid deposition inside the nerve. This might prompt central, multifocal, or diffuse neuropathies including sensory, motor as well as autonomic filaments. The features or symptoms rely upon the distribution of the affected nerves. One of the most well-known aggregates is sensorimotor polyneuropathy, which is characterised by numbness, extreme weakness and neuropathic pain. In this article we shall discuss amyloid polyneuropathy disease in detail and discuss its management in the contemporary system of medicine and in the traditional Indian system of ayurvedic medicine. Let’s get started!!
Introduction
Amyloidoses are a group of disorders that have a diverse range of clinical manifestations. Amyloidosis is characterised by the deposition of misassembled, insoluble proteins that can ultimately result in hampering normal structure and functioning of the tissues. Till now 30 proteins have been identified as main amyloid fibril components. Based on aetiology, the deposition of amyloid can affect various organs particularly heart, liver and kidney. This deposition of amyloid can also affect the peripheral motor, sensory and autonomic nerves. Sometimes, neuropathy is the initial manifestation of the disease. Lets see further the causes, types and management of amyloidosis that affect the nervous system.
Causes of Amyloid Polyneuropathy Disease
The major cause of amyloid polyneuropathy disease is gene mutation in the TTR gene. There is an inherited fault in synthesis of enzyme transthyretin (TTR). This protein is responsible for transport of vitamin A and thyroxine hormone in the bloodstream. This leads to deposition of abnormal protein amyloid in the bloodstream and invades into the nerves which further causes neuropathy.
Risk Factors
- Age: ages between 60 and 70 are more to develop amyloidosis
- Sex: more common in men than women
- Other diseases: inflammatory conditions and chronic infections
- Family history: some types of amyloidosis are hereditary
- Kidney dialysis: abnormal proteins sometimes build up in the bloodstream and can get deposited in the tissues.
- Race: African people appear to be at higher risk of carrying a genetic mutation linked to a type of amyloidosis that can damage the heart.
Signs and Symptoms
- Severe fatigue and weakness
- Pain, tingling or numbness in the feet or hands
- Diarrhoea or constipation
- An enlarged tongue with serrations
- Skin changes such as thickening of the skin and easy bruising and purplish colored patches around the eyes.
- Swelling of the legs and ankles.
- Shortness of breath
Amyloidosis is a common term that includes all kinds of amyloid deposition sites. The presentation of amyloidosis depends on the site involved. Usually heart and kidney are commonly involved. As these are important organs. Let’s have a glimpse over it as well.
Kidney:
Deposition of amyloid in the mesangial regions and glomerular capillaries affects the filtration. This leads to high excretion of protein in the urine and nephrotic syndrome. Several types of amyloidosis are linked with nephrotic syndrome.
Heart:
Deposition of amyloid in the heart may lead to systolic and diastolic heart failure. ECG may show atrioventricular block or sinus node dysfunction.
Cardiac amyloidosis can show the features of heart failure including fatigue, edema and shortness of breath. Amyloid deposition restricts the pumping of the heart that can lead to worsening of the heart functioning and deteriorates the quality of life.
Nervous System:
Usually people with amyloidosis can develop autonomic and sensory neuropathies. Sensory neuropathy develops in a symmetrical pattern and progresses in a distal to proximal manner. Autonomic neuropathy may manifest as gastrointestinal symptoms such as early satiety, nausea, constipation. Numbness, unusual sensations and pain are the most common features of involvement of the nervous system.

Ayurvedic Aspect and Management of Amyloid Polyneuropathy Disease
Ayurveda is a traditional medicinal system of India. Ayurveda has been serving mankind and the termination of the disease from their root cause. Amyloid polyneuropathy disease is a disease that occurs due to deposition of amyloid in the nerves. This can result in various symptoms according to the affected nerves.
As the vata dosha is responsible for all the neurological functions, any kind of vata vitiation leads to the symptoms such as pain, numbness, paresthesia, tingling sensation, increased or decreased movements. Further the deposition of amyloid in the nerves can be well compared with the concept of ama formation and kapha dosha aggravation. Further as it has inherited in origin, thus we can see this as beej dushti in the lens of Ayurveda.
So now the management depends on the pacification of the vitiated dosha and providing strength to the nerves and muscles and ama pachan. And we have magnificent herbs and herbal medicines that correct the disease so well.
Herbs such as amalaki (Embellica officinalis), haritaki (Terminlia chebula), bibhitaki (Terminalia bellerica), giloy (Tinospora cordifolia), bala (Sida cordifolia), erand (Ricinus communis), ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), guggulu (Commiphora mukul), draksha (Vitis vinifera), brahmi (Bacopa monnieri), yashtimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra) etc are beneficial in amyloid polyneuropathy disease.
