Ayurvedic View

In Ayurveda, oromandibular dystonia can be related to the ‘hanugraha’ or ‘hanusthambha’ as quoted in the Charka Samhita. Vata dosha gets aggravated in the mamsa (muscle) dhatu thereby causing various types of dystonia. Along with bahya chikitsa (external therapies) like snehana (oleation), swedana (sudation) etc., internal Ayurvedic medications are also used for its treatment. Mainly vata-kapha doshahara medications are preferred.
