Metabolic syndrome or Syndrome X is a cluster of syndromes/conditions that occur together that increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes mellitus. The prevalence is increasing worldwide and risk is equal in males and females. Mainly adults are more prone to this disease. Having metabolic syndrome can result in serious health problems. Let us have a look at what conditions lead to the occurrence of metabolic syndrome and how we can deal with them with ayurvedic treatment.
Metabolic syndrome conditions include – high blood sugar, high blood pressure, obesity (excess body fat around the stomach and waist), and high cholesterol levels with high triglycerides levels. Having any one of these conditions doesn’t indicate metabolic syndrome. When all these conditions occur simultaneously in one person at a period of time is called Syndrome X. There are several risk factors involved in developing metabolic syndrome. These factors can be hereditary within you (diabetes, obesity). Therefore it is very important to seek treatment at the early stages of these conditions to prevent the progression into syndrome X. that can be prevented by obeying dietary rules and living a healthy life with yoga, following Dincharya (daily routine according to own health, and prakriti as described in Ayurveda texts).
We can correlate metabolic syndrome to Sroto avarodh (blockage of channels) along with Kapha avarana in Ayurveda.
Shloka :-”Srotaamsi khalu parinamum apadhyamananam I dhatunaam abhivahini bhavanti ayana arthena II”(Charak viman 5/3)
The channels in the body that carry material (life elements, water, nutrition, energy) of transportation to all dhatus and body tissues are called srotas. Srotas are present throughout our body and are key channels for the transportation of basic body necessities through it in the body. Srotas provide nourishment to the different parts of the body and thus if any body part of these srotas is clogged, they will not be able to transport the nourishment to that part or will allow only half or less than it to pass further through that clogged channel. This leads to the malfunctioning of that part/organ of the body. Moreover, srotas when covered with Kapha dosha will multiply these factors and will lead to serious diseases in the body.
There are two types of srotas in the body
- Antar mukha srotas (internal opening channels) = They are 13 in total.
- Bahir mukha srotas (external opening apertures) = 10 in total
- Sedentary lifestyle
- Improper and unhealthy diet
- Alcohol consumption
- Opioids/ drugs intake
- Neglecting the need for exercise and yoga
- Hereditary diseases like diabetes
