Different Tick Borne Infections and Their Treatment In Ayurveda

ABSTRAC

This write-up will be all about various diseases and differences between them including their signs and symptoms, causes, diagnosis, and basic Ayurvedic treatment. We will be discussing here Lyme disease, Babesiosis, Bartonellosis, Anaplasmosis, Ehrlichiosis. The common thing in between all of them is that they all are caused by tick bites, however, the microorganism causing them may differ. The main way to prevent yourself from these infectious diseases is to avoid tick bites.

DISEASES

1. LYME DISEASE

This is the infectious disease caused by Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria which are transmitted to humans through a bite from deer tick or black-legged. Signs and symptoms may appear with 3 days to 30 days after the bite from the infectious organism and the severity of the complaints may depend upon the severity and stage of the infection. Even in some rare cases the signs and symptoms may appear after a few months of the bite. The most interesting fact about this is that the tick to transmit the infection should attach to your body at least for 36-48 hours and removing the tick before this period is completed makes you safe from getting the infection.

The Signs and Symptoms include

Headache
Stiff neck
Rashes on body
Swelling and pain in joints
Loss of tone of muscles causing drooping on the face
Palpitations or irregular heart rate
Inflamed spinal cord or brain
Severe pains, tingling, and numbness in feet and hands

2. BABESIOSIS

It is one of the rare blood infections but can prove to be fatal in some conditions. Babesiosis is caused by Babesia which is tiny parasites. Babesia microti is the most commonly affecting type of this parasite. When the bite occurs the organism enters the bloodstream and then the red blood cells. Babesiosis can also be transmitted to humans through transfusion of contaminated blood or by infected mother to baby during birth.

The Common Signs and Symptoms observed are

Pain in body
Chills
Fever
Fatigue and malaise
Sweating
Loss of appetite
Mental confusion
Palpitations
Dizziness and weakness
Dark urine
Yellow skin, eyes, and mouth due to jaundice

3. BARTONELLOSIS

This infection is caused in humans by the bacteria called Bartonella. Bartonellosis can be of various types like Cat scratch disease, Trench fever, and Carrion’s disease. This infectious disease can present itself in two ways, either Acute septic phase or Chronic eruptive phase. It is a potentially life-threatening condition and if not treated timely can prove to be fatal.

Pain and aches all over the body
Fatigue
Headache
Chill
Pain in back and abdomen
Soreness of throat
Weight loss

4. ANAPLASMOSIS

It is also a tick borne disease which is caused by the bite of a tick carrying Anaplasma phagocytophilum. The other modes of contracting Anaplasmosis is through infected syringes, contaminated blood transfusion, tattoo instruments, castration or hypodermic needles. These are gram negative micro-organism that too infect red blood cells. One interesting fact about this infection is that it is also caused by the same ticks that transmit Lyme disease.

The Signs and Symptoms of Anaplasmosis are

Fever
Decrease in number of white blood cells
Decreased platelets
Increased levels of Liver enzymes
Increased heart rate
Blood in urine
Diarrhea
Anorexia
Weight loss

5. EHRLICHIOSIS

This is also a bacterial infectious disease transmitted by ticks that causes symptoms similar to those of flu. Anaplasmosis and Ehrlichiosis are closely related but both are transmitted by different microorganisms. The prognosis of Ehrlichiosis is better than Anaplasmosis. The signs and symptoms starts to develop after 24 hours of infected tick feeding on the person. Initially the symptoms are similar to those of flu.

Fever (Mild)
Headache
Pain in muscles
Chills
Nausea
Vomiting
Fatigue and malaise
Diarrhea
Loss of appetite
Pain in joints
Mental confusion
Rashes on skin
Cough
