Ayurvedic Treatment For Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis

Sometimes in our life we encounter some health issues for which a cause is not found. Such diseases are called Idiopathic diseases. Arthritis is a word that might seem common in the elderly, but this is not always the case, as sometimes the condition also affects the children below 17. In this topic we are going to discuss juvenile idiopathic arthritis in detail and its ayurvedic treatment.

Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis is also known with another name of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. This is the commonest type of arthritis that children of age below 16-17 are affected with. In some affected children the symptoms may be present only for a few months, while others may experience the symptoms for their whole life. Though both sexes are equally affected, girls are more susceptible to this condition.

The exact cause of the juvenile idiopathic arthritis is not known yet. It is considered to be an autoimmune response of the body, where the immune system starts attacking its own healthy cells.

Following are the symptoms of juvenile idiopathic arthritis.

  • Pain in the small joints of the hands and feet. Pain is of continuous type.
  • Stiffness: Stiffness in the joints with swelling especially marked in the morning.
  • Redness in the joints. Swelling and redness of joints especially knee joint
  • Fever and generalised weakness
  • Fatigue
  • Rashes on the trunk which usually aggravates in the evening

Complications of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis

  • Growth of the affected children: This could hinder the normal growth and bone development of the children who are suffering from this condition. Sometimes the medications which are used to manage this disease also affect the growth.
  • Eyes: Inflammation of the eyes is another complication of juvenile idiopathic arthritis, which if left untreated, may lead to glaucoma, cataract and in worst cases even blindness.

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis is generally diagnosed with the help of blood work that includes ESR, CRP, RA factor. Sometimes the physician may also advise to get imaging tests done like X-ray to rule out any other condition e.g fractures, birth defects in the bones and tumour. X-ray is also beneficial in regular monitoring of bones to check their development.

Treatment in Allopathy

The treatment of juvenile idiopathic arthritis in allopathy is limited to prescribing pain relievers. Prolonged usage of painkillers

Ayurvedic point of view in Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis

In Ayurvedic ancient texts the concept of diagnosing and preparing a treatment plan for any disease is different from that of modern. It is not merely the organs which are to be taken into consideration, but the whole system that is composed of body and soul. This physical body is governed by some energies that are known as doshas in Ayurveda. There are three types of doshas; Vata, Pitta and Kapha which co-exist in a living being. These energies are responsible for carrying out the various life processes and keeping an individual healthy.

A disease is nothing but a vitiation of one of the three doshas. This could be because of many lifestyle errors like overeating, unhealthy foods consumption, sleep deprivation etc. In the juvenile idiopathic arthritis the culprit is vitiated vata dosha and accumulation of Ama (endotoxins) in the body. Therefore, the treatment should be aimed at the pacification of Vata dosha and removal of ama.
