How to Manage the Effects of Global Warming On Human Health with Ayurveda?

ABSTRACT

Amazon forest fires, melting of glaciers, depletion of the ozone layer have become the common buzzword these days? Have you ever wondered why the global temperature is rising? All these climate changes are manmade effects causing harmful devastation to our own planet Earth.

Various conventions and conferences on Climate Change came up with the warning to stop burning fossil fuels to avoid any production of harmful greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. These greenhouse gases are not only causing air pollution but also causing harm to the overall environment and its effects have serious threats to human health.

Global Warming

INTRODUCTION

Global warming often termed as climate change is caused by gradual heating of the Earth’s surface due to human activity that has ultimately lead to the emission of harmful greenhouses gases. These harmful gases include Carbon dioxide (CO2), Methane (CH4), Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) in the environment. Greenhouses gases increases are due to – natural process and human activities. Natural causes include the release of methane from arctic tundra or the release of normal carbon dioxide by trees, whereas man-made causes include pollution, burning of fossil fuels, etc.

Although global warming is a natural process it is increased by more human activities such as industrialization, deforestation, increasing use of fuel using vehicles. In recent times, we have seen many deteriorating effects on Earth-like Amazon forest fires, Zika virus, melting of ice in Greenland and Antarctica. Global warming has also resulted in the depletion of the ozone layer, the ozone layer is the atmospheric layer that protects us from the direct exposure of sunlight and human activities, industrialization has resulted in its depletion, and gave rise to many skin-related issues, eye cataracts, etc. This article is about the harmful effects of climate change on human health and the herbal treatments provided for the same by Planet Ayurveda.

CAUSES

Let’s get a glance at the reasons for increasing the global temperature. The main reasons for increasing Global warming are as follows-

INDUSTRIALIZATION

Industrialization causes an increase in the manufacturing industries and causes an increase in industrial smoke. Power industries and mining require the burning of fossil fuels. Industrialization results in Urbanization, business growth results in an increase in factories, manufacturing industries and hence causes pollution.

DEFORESTATION

Trees and forests maintain a good balance between oxygen and carbon dioxide. Cutting, burning of trees and forests causes an increase in the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the air.

EMISSION OF FOSSIL FUELS

Burning of plastic, polythene bags causes an increase in dangerous chemicals such as sulfur dioxide, hydrochloric acids, etc. These emissions cause an increase in the pollutants and dust particles in the air. Air conditioners and Refrigerators causes an increase in the emission of CFCs in the air.

WASTE DISPOSAL METHODS

Various kinds of waste disposal methods like landfilling including methane are released into the atmosphere, soil, and waterways.

DEPLETION OF CORALS

The depletion of coral water causes acidic water and contaminates the drinking water.

CONSEQUENCES ON HUMAN HEALTH

Global warming is caused by both natural and man-made activities but it has some serious threats to human health. Below are the effects of global warming on human health:

DETERIORATION OF MENTAL HEALTH

Physical and mental health go hand in hand. Burn and smoke inhalation has given rise to various lungs and respiratory diseases. Increasing dust particles, smoke causes harm to human health. Problems like High BP, stress, anxiety, and migraine are all results of deteriorating human health.

VECTOR BORNE DISEASES

Climate instability causes an increase in mosquito-borne diseases and causes an increase in infections like malaria, chikungunya, dengue, and zika.

ACIDIC WATER

The depletion of corals and increasing heat causes an increase in the growth of algae and toxic substances that are harmful to humans if consumed. It contaminates the drinking water supply, causing an increase in high sodium water.

IMMUNITY DEFICIENCY DISORDERS

Depletion of the ozone layer causes the direct reflection of UV rays which causes many skin related problems, immunity deficiency disorders, and eye cataracts.

DETERIORATING NUTRITIONAL VALUE OF CROPS

Due to the increase in the diversity of pests, loss of arable water, lower groundwater level causes a decrease in the nutritional value of crops.

PREVENTIVE MEASURES

It is said that prevention is better than cure. Let’s look at the steps which can help in reducing the effects of greenhouse gases on human health-

  • Avoid burning fossil fuels and plastics.
  • Find the alternative to fossil fuels like CNG gases in vehicles.
  • Increase the plantation of trees.
  • Proper waste management activities.
  • Keep changing the stagnant water to avoid feeding of mosquitoes.
  • Avoid disposals of harmful chemicals in the waterway.
