Introduction

Immunity “the quality of being immune” Immunity is a state of being able to repel particular disease especially through shutting off development of microorganism or by preventing the effects of its products. Immunity is of two types: Active immunity and passive immunity. Active immunity produces antibodies when our body gets exposed to a disease or organism that triggers the immune system and hence our body produces antibodies to prevent the disease. The passive immunity is the immunity provided externally by giving antibodies to a disease willingly rather than producing them through our own immune system.

All about immune system

The system of our body that maintains our immunity is known as the immune system. The immune system is a great network of proteins and cells that guard the body against infection. The malfunctioning of the immune system leads the way to allergic conditions, autoimmune disorders and immunodeficiency. Part of immune system:

  • White blood cells: White blood cells are the main leading unit in our immune system. They are a part of our lymphatic system and made in our bone marrow. White blood cells consist of lymphocytes like B-cells, T-cells and natural killer cells. Types of white blood cells are granulocytes (neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils) and agranulocytes.
  • Antibodies: Produced by our immune system in response to recognized antigen on the surface of the microbe. They produce the chemicals that spot the microbe as foreign body and mark them for destruction.
  • Lymphatic system: is a network that works together with organs, tissues and vessels that carry lymph,(a watery and colorless fluid).
  • Bone marrow: is present inside your bones produces red blood cells-having oxygen carrying capacity, white blood cells-for fighting with infection.
  • Other shelters:-Saliva, tears, skin oil, stomach acid, urinary system.

Immunity as per ayurvedic perspective

As per ayurvedic perspective immunity is known as vyadhikshamatva or Bala. A condition of vyadhikshamatva is maintained by keeping the balanced state of all doshas, dhatus, agni and patent srotas.Vyadhikshamatva is the strength of our body that reduces the disease power and prevents the body from being diseased. Some patients are having good vyadhikshamatva that they are able to get over the disease on their own even without any medication and some of the patients are having such low levels of immunity strength that they are not able to overcome the disease even after taking medications.

  • Yuktikrita bala(Acquired immunity): yuktikrita bala is acquired by yukti of specifically formed diet and regimen. It would be developed even  by the intake of Rasayana (rejuvenating) and vajikarana (Aphrodisiac) aushadhi (ch.su.11/36)
  • Kalaja bala (temporary immunity):is the immunity that developed within the body with respect to growing age or with the change in season. As in yuvavastha and balyawastha bala is more as compared to vridhavastha. Also in aadana kala bala decreases and in visarga kala it increases.
