Primary Pulmonary Hypertension (PPH) is a type of hypertension that affects the lungs. It is a lung disorder that rarely occurs. In this condition, there is a narrowing of blood vessels in the lungs that increases the pressure in the pulmonary artery compared to normal levels. It also affect the right side of the heart. It is also called idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension. Pulmonary hypertension is a chronic disease. If left untreated, it can cause heart failure.
Cause of Primary Pulmonary Hypertension
The exact cause of primary pulmonary hypertension is not known. It is said to be caused by genetic factors and many other factors. Usually, there is no primary heart or lung disease that causes hypertension.
Genetic Factor: It is associated with genes and runs in the family. Mutation of the gene causes the sensitivity of blood vessels to many factors, which cause the narrowing of the blood vessels.
Symptoms of Primary Pulmonary Hypertension
In the early stage of pulmonary hypertension, signs or symptoms may not be detectable for months or years. As the disease progresses, the symptoms worsen.
- Dyspnea (while exercising and sometimes while at rest)
- Fatigue and tiredness
- Swelling in ankles, legs and sometimes in stomach
- Blue color to lips and skin
- Heart palpitations or racing pulse
Diagnosis of Primary Pulmonary Hypertension
PPH is difficult to diagnose because it is rarely seen on any physical examination. In its advanced stages, the signs and symptoms of the disease may be similar to other diseases affecting the heart and lungs. So, it creates difficulty to diagnose.
Doctors can examine family and medical history, signs and symptoms for its diagnosis. Physicians recommend several tests for the diagnosis of pulmonary hypertension that determine the severity and cause of the condition.
