Introduction
Dysmenorrhea is defined as painful menstruation. Pain occurs due to uterine contractions that begin one or two days before the periods and may be precise when bleeding starts. The intensity of pain varies from mild to severe. Dysmenorrhea may primarily exist from menarche or begin later in life at any age due to many conditions. The primary cause of Dysmenorrhea is physiological and refers to recurrent pain while Secondary Dysmenorrhea occurs due to pathological abnormalities in the reproductive system.
Ayurvedic Aspect
“Kasht Artav” is described as painful menstruation in women that can be correlated to Dysmenorrhea. It is a symptom of various diseases. According to acharya Charak, the cause for Kasht Artav is an aggravation of Vata dosha in combination with pitta and Kapha dosha. The Vata dosha handles pain and the other two doshas are responsible for other associated symptoms. The Apan Vayu disturbance directly impacts the lower body of the women as its main function is maintaining proper pelvic floor functioning.
Normal discharge of menstrual blood from Yoni (vagina) occurs through two dhamni’s (arteries) under the influence of ‘Apan Vayu’. Any disturbance in yoni aakriti, dhamni and apan vayu will hinder this normal cycle of menstruation. The aggravation of Vata and disturbance in Apan Vayu leads to painful menstruation.
