What is Aneurysmal Bone Cyst? -Symptoms Causes, Diagnosis & Treatment
Aneurysmal bone cyst is a tumor-like benign growth which keeps on expanding and consists of variable sized spaces filled with blood which are separated by septa of connective tissue. Osteoclast giant cells and osteoid tissues are present in the septa. Children in their first two decades of life are usually affected with aneurysmal bone cyst and any bone can be involved in it. Although aneurysmal is benign in nature but it can show a really aggressive side as well, it goes on expanding resulting in swelling, pain, deformity, pathological fracture, disruption of joint surfaces or growth plates and neurological symptoms. INTRODUCTION
Aneurysmal bone cyst is a rare benign bone tumor that is highly destructive in nature. Aneurysmal itself means expansile and explosive in nature. Usually the aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) are hollow and generally filled with some fluid or blood and this makes them fragile, hence can easily be ruptured or bone fracture can occur. In some cases these cyst can be solid tumors also instead of being hollow. Usually these ABC occur primarily which means on their own without any other disease being present in the body. In some cases these cyst can occur along with the chondroblastomas, tumors, osteoblastomas, fibrous dysplasia, hemangiomas and telangiectatic osteosarcomas. People in their first two decades of life are more likely to have it and the common locations being leg-femur, tibia and fibula, arm-humerus, spine, and pelvis.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
- Pain in the affected area or bone
- Minimal trauma causing fracture reveals the ABC if bones are fragile and thin
- Swelling
- If the cyst is in the spine than neurological symptoms may appear
CAUSES
The exact cause behind the Aneurysmal bone cyst is not known and is controversial. These cysts are not hereditary in nature. Some of the factors which are considered to be the causes are:
- Disturbance in the blood vessels of the bone resulting in growth of ABC
- Pre-existing tumor can contribute in their growth like osteosarcoma, fibrous dysplasia, solitary bone cyst or nonossifying fibroma
- Wrong translocation of small parts of the chromosomes usually 16 and 17 results in ABC. This translocation is supposed to be activating the specific oncogene (tumor causing gene) which results in development of this aggressive and destructive tumor. This oncogene also triggers the formation of a certain enzyme which destroys the bone’s structural matrix. Also a specific protein which I am responsible for the growth of blood supply that enhances the tumor to grow more rapidly is triggered by oncogene.
DIAGNOSIS
Physical examination and medical history taken by your doctor will clear some of the symptoms and indicate towards the ABC. For the confirmation of it and ruling out other possibilities, patient is advised to go for certain tests like:
- X-ray
- CT (Computed tomography) scan
- MRI (Magnetic resonance imaging)
MRI is the most specific confirmatory test which will reveal the cyst along with its cystic spaces filled with blood and separate. At last biopsy is done to confirm the Aneurysmal bone cyst.
TREATMENT OF ANEURYSMAL BONE CYST
In the conventional system of medicine, ABC is treated usually with surgery. It is removed surgically, either the complete bone or only the tumor is removed from it. During surgery if the bone is weak the cement, metal or bone is grafted. Radiation therapy is also done in some cases but it is not found to be successful many times.
Ayurveda can manage and treat this condition without surgical intervention. 1. Kanchnaar guggul

However it should be diagnosed and treated timely because if the cyst lies on the bone which is around an important structure then it can lead to serious complications.
