Alternative Treatment of Leptospirosis in Humans – Herbal Remedies
Abstract
There are many forms of life on our planet Earth. They are broadly divided into single cellular and multicellular organisms. For example, humans are multicellular organisms, whereas bacteria are unicellular organisms. There are thousands of bacteria present in our surroundings out of which some are friendly and some are not. There are a number of diseases which are caused by bacteria like cholera, tuberculosis, tetanus, anthrax etc. Today in this topic we will learn about a disease which is caused by a bacterial infection called Leptospirosis.
Introduction
This is a disease which affects both humans and animals by the bacteria that belongs to the genus Leptospira. We will discuss the effects on humans only. Its prevalence is seen more in temperate and tropical climate regions. If not treated at time, then it might prove lethal as it could do damage to kidneys, liver, brain (Inflammation of the spinal cord and brain i.e meningitis).
Causes
Leptospirosis is spread from the infected animal to humans. This is done in the following ways:
- Urine of the infected animal with Leptospira
- This urine gets mixed in the different mediums like soil and water
- There it could survive for weeks or months (Infected animals could not show any symptoms for years)
- Then humans are infected when they come in contact with this through skin (when there is a cut or scratch), mucous membranes of eyes, mouth or nose.
Symptoms
Following are the symptoms of Leptospirosis:
- Pain in muscles
- Headache
- Vomitings
- Chills
- Skin rashes
- Jaundice (Yellow pigmentation of skin and eyes)
- Diarrhoea
There are two phases of Leptospirosis, in the first phase (less severe) the symptoms are vomiting, fever, chills and muscles. If the second phase occurs, it is more severe as it could lead to complaints like liver failure, kidney failure or meningitis (inflammation of the brain and spinal cord).
Diagnosis
When presenting with the above mentioned complaints, it might be a possibility to get confused as the picture resembles many other infectious diseases like malaria, dengue, influenza etc. Therefore, it is very necessary to rule out the other conditions. Usually, an antigen detection test with the help of ELISA has been proved helpful to diagnose this condition. Molecular tests like PCR (Polymerase chain reaction) test also diagnose Leptospirosis.
Treatment in allopathy
The treatment of Leptospirosis is totally dependent on the administration of the antibiotics.
