Abstract
Pelvic inflammatory disease is also short termed as P.I.D is defined as an infection of woman’s reproductive system which usually occurs due to STDs , bacterial infection etc. This is an infection of the upper reproductive tract i.e fallopian tube, ovaries, and uterus. If not treated in time infection may get worse resulting in abscesses (fluid-filled pockets) and even scar tissue which can do permanent damage to reproductive organs also can spread to surrounding structures. Severe to mild Pelvic pain and inability to achieve pregnancy are some common features in this condition.
Introduction
P.I.D is a condition seen in most of the cases of back pain in females. Due to the unhygienic conditions, untreated uti (urine tract infection) which gets worsened over time or STDs may result in this condition. Back pain, pelvic pain, nauseated feeling, fever, vaginal discharge, etc are the symptoms in PID. Gonorrhoea and chlamydia are two common sources of infection in Pelvic inflammatory disease. Bacteria first enters in vagina due to unhygienic conditions or unprotected intercourse, causing an infection. As time progresses and due to negligence the infection leads to progression and the infection moves to pelvic organs. PID can make a woman infertile and can also become life threatening if infection moves to blood.

Ayurvedic Overview on Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
There is no such direct Ayurvedic correlation to Pelvic Inflammatory disease But according to symptoms of P.I.D we can say that there is vatta and pitta vitiation which leads to symptoms like inflammation, pain, burning sensation, foul odour, discharge etc. In ayurvedic texts there is description of female reproductive diseases under “YONI VYAPAD ”. Due to the causes there will be vitiation following dosha which enters in the “rakta vaha (micro blood channels) and Artava vaha srotas(micro channels in reproductive systems)” resulting in disturbance of normal defence mechanism of yoni (vagina) resulting in infection. Conclusion
P.I.D is an infectious condition that can be cured but the effects of these conditions may last long or can be permanent. Hence one should be very careful if suffering from recurrent UTI (urinary tract infections) or other infective conditions and should be dealt with at the earliest. Recurrency in P.I.D may result in the formation of permanent scar tissue in reproductive organs hampering their functions resulting in conceiving a baby or causing infertility. There are many risk factors for this condition like multiple sex partners, use of an intrauterine contraceptive device, bacterial vaginosis, vaginal douching, and a history of STDs. Ayurvedic management has shown very fruitful results in this condition.
